26.07.18: in kraków for a few days and took a look at the ‘motherland in art’ exhibition in the MOCAK. ‘motherland’ – the title alone grabbed my attention as some of the research i had been doing on landscape, gender and identity touched on the way language is used to describe or ascribe a land/landscape to gender – fatherland, motherland etc. however, the exhibition did not really look at gender specifically but rather national identity. i felt some of the strongest work was the polish work which explored polish national identity in the context of their relatively recent independence from a solviet regime. best of all was the photographic work which looked at national identity through symbol, people and place. here is some images of the work … check out https://en.mocak.pl/ for more info.
