social conventions and sound rules

the hunk: played at different times, different tones/timbers and has a function – to alert to be noticed. frequency plays a role depending on the place/culture. a twice a day event. consider concurrency – what are you listening to, what comes together – several layers of sounds happening simultaneously. they might not be related to each other but they happen at the same time. the sounds of body and object together.

clapping and cultural meaning: applause: meaning is dependent on associations of cultural values. clapping can be group binding, agreeing together. can be also used as a control mechanism – see communist korea, as loud clapping can silence dissention. can be used to show dissent – often slower. therefore perspective is important when analysing sound. individuals contribute to the group. individuals can express their own particular opinion, but also expressing an agreement with others. clapping can also signify meaning and value. globally understood.

sound rules: a cultural phenomenon. there are global rules and local rules. spaces have their own sound rules – restaurants, churches, libraries, bathroom, arenas etc. globally understood. eating rules can be more local – attitudes to burping, slurping, sniffing, spitting etc. these sound rules can apply to other areas not just the body, e.g. the woods can be a quiet place.
