printing experimentation: i had a great day printing in London in Artichoke Print Studio, where i worked through the process of mono-printing and image transfer printing. these are great processes to continue in my studio as they do not involve chemical baths and although we used a printing press, they could also be done through rubbing instead. i used the day to work on images taken from screen shots of the film i am working on – images of the river water surface and refection of trees. i was happy to work freely through the process without any need for a finished piece. although i will likely explore still images through screen printing, this certainly has its place in the process – perhaps a step before working on transparencies which could help decide composition, colour etc. anyway – some images and notes about the process from the day ….
process notes for image transfer:
1: select images to work from – print off on light paper and with varying degrees of contrast
2: mix inks with plate oil
3: soak paper for printing on
4: soak image (photocopy) for 1 minute
5: sponge on ink on the soaked image
6: sponge off the ink (the ink will hold to the photocopy ink)
7: dry off (rub between blotting paper) the soaked paper for printing on
7: place the paper on the press
8: position and place the inked image on the paper
9: roll through the press
process notes for mono-printing:
1: using acetate – make off the areas you want to ink and leave
2: mix inks with plate oil – use etching ink extender
3: roll/add coloured inks to acetate
4: roll through the press
